The Weir Group is one of the biggest engineering groups in the world, having expertise and engineering solutions for oil & gas, power, minerals and other industrial markets. Their mission is to be the partner of choice to worldwide customers and in extending the Group activities in its chosen markets. The group employs 14,000 people and operates in more than 70 countries, 400 of which can be found in Weir Minerals in Venlo, Netherlands.
Weir Minerals has been in Venlo, Netherlands for 100 years and, having been founded in 1916, a couple of months ago celebrated its 100th anniversary. The Netherlands branch manufactures pumps and pulverisers for the mining industry, for which heavy duty lathes are required. To make these parts, they have two TUR MN FAT Haco heavy duty lathes. Rit Smits, Manufacturing Manager, explains that they have always turned parts for the pumps but, more recently, the requirement for machining pulveriser parts has increased. Rit explains that the Weir Group places very high importance on safety, quality and cost effectiveness, hence the reason for the purchase of the two TUR MN FAT Haco lathes.
Michael Van De Beek, one of the operators of the FAT Haco lathes, explains that the Siemens control (Siemens 840D) with Saturn software is extremely easy to use when programming the machine and, with the Sauter head, no manual tool changes are needed, saving valuable production time. The Sauter head fitted has four tool positions which enable the machine run automatically in almost every program, which adds to the high importance placed on safety and quality, all resulting in more profitable production.
